Expectant Blessings: Prayers, Poems, and Devotions For You and Your BabyExpectant Blessings: Prayers, Poems, and Devotions For You and Your Baby by Susanna Foth Aughtmon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is written for mothers to be. It is a collection of devotions, poems, and prayers to inspire, uplift, and encourage. Each chapter includes a small devotional/poem to encourage the mother from the first sign of pregnancy to the delivery room. The devotional spot is fairly short and segues to a small prayer over the content of that chapter and a reflection prompt.

Definitely written for women, I think my wife would have been much better suited to reviewing this title than I am. However, having gone through the experiences with my wife (yet not to the same degree), I am able to read this title with reminders of the special moments pregnancy provides along the way. There is, as the author points out, a unique experience to pregnancy that is quite unlike any other. The ups, downs, and all-arounds are a whirlwind to experience yet worth every moment. I would not go back to change any of it, other than to be more involved (I don’t know if I could do that, since the only step of separation at this point is being the carrier myself!).

The prose is simple and encouraging, and the author achieves their goal. This book is a great optional read for those needing encouragement, or laughter, in their current or upcoming pregnancy. While some theology presented is questionable, the main point of this work is not theology, so it is not a critical issue to consider for this title.
